Jagnow

 

The patriarch Karl (Charles) Jagnow was married to Julia J. Jeffke. The Jagnow’s were from Altstadt-Stolp, Pommern, in the Kingdom of Prussia. 

The area of Stolp was historically a Kashubian settlement, independent of Polish or German identity. In the 1800's it came under the rule of the Prussian state. The family boarded the ship Ethiopia in Glasgow and immigrated to America arriving at the port of New York on April 19, 1881. The Jagnow family settled on a farm South of Little Neck Bay in the Douglaston area of New York. 

 

Karl Jagnow was born on 5 August, 1831 in Prussia and died on 28 March, 1888 at Douglaston, New York. Karl acquired a farm in Douglaston and he worked the land until his death in 1888. He is buried on 29 March, 1888 at the St. Paul’s German Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York. The Jagnow family continued to work the farm in the Douglaston area of New York after Karl Jagnow passed away. 

 

Julia J. Jeffke was born on 3 July, 1834 and died on 25 July, 1924 in Hempstead, New York. She is buried at the St. Paul’s German Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York.

 

Karl and Julia Jagnow’s five children are as follows:

 

1st - Ferdinand P. Jagnow left the family farm in Douglaston around 1906 and started a farm in Valley Stream, New York. Ferdinand Jagnow was an Elder at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church from February 1904 to January 1929. Ferdinand lists his naturalization on 1 October, 1891 to become a U.S. citizen. Ferdinand was born in Prussia on 22 February, 1862 and died at the Rockville Centre Hospital on 8 March, 1929. Ferdinand was buried on 11 March, 1929 at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery in, Elmont, New York. Ferdinand was never married.

 

2nd - Johann (John) Herman Jagnow was born on 24 June, 1864 in Prussia. Six months after his arrival he was naturalized on 21 October, 1888. John was 37 years old when he married Sophie Anna Elise (Anna S.) Stiehler. Sophie was 24 years old when she married and was born in Springfield, Long Island, New York. John and Sophie were married on 15 April, 1903, at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Elmont, New York. John and his brother Charles, continued working on the original family farm in Douglaston. John died in 1924 and was buried on June 8, 1924 at the St. Paul’s German Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York.

 

Sophie Anna Elise (Anna S.) Stiehler was born on 24 July 1878 in Springfield, Long Island, New York and died on 8 October, 1943 at the Flushing Hospital, Queens, New York. Anna S. was buried on 12 October, 1943 at the at the St. Paul’s German Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York.

 

John and Anna S. had three children together.

 

i - Anna Elise Jagnow – was born on 5 June, 1904 in Queens, New York and died 4 February, 1985 in Sarasota, Florida. She was married to Phillip Benedict Crommelin. She is buried at the Newell Cemetery, Stanton, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. No children are listed.

 

ii - John Albert Jagnow – was born on 5 September, 1906 in Douglaston, Queens, New York and died in January, 1983 at Valley Stream, New York. He was married to Johanna Caroline A. Windhorst. He is buried at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. No children listed.

 

iii - Caroline Marie Jagnow – was born on 15 July, 1911 in Queens, New York and died on 21 November, 1981 in New York. She was married to Howard M. Clemmings. She is buried at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. No children listed.

 

3rd - Karl (Charles) H. Jagnow – Charles was born in August, 1866 in Prussia. Charles married Emma Knop on 30 December, 1902 at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Elmont, New York. Charles was 35 years old and Emma was 26 years old. Charles continued to work the family farm in Douglaston with his brother John. Charles continued farming in Nassau County until his death in 1946. The St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church records lists his death on 6 October, 1946. He was buried on 9 October, 1946 at the at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York.

 

Emma Knop (Knoph, Giule) – The Knop spelling is the proper spelling and is recorded on the 1880 and 1900 Knop census documents. Emma’s recorded family are her father Albert, mother Bertha, a brother Frederick on the 1880 census and a brother Albert on the 1900 census. The Knop spelling is also recorded on several St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church records. Emma was born in New York per several census documents. Her birth date is 8 September, 1876 as recorded on the 1900 census. Emma’s death and burial location are unknown.

 

Charles and Emma had two children together:

 

i - Alvina Louisa Jagnow – was born on 23 September, 1903 Queens County, New York and died in March, 1978. She is buried at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. Never married.

 

ii - Emma Bertha Jagnow – was born on 9 July, 1906, Queens County, New York. She is buried at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. Never married.

 

4th - Alwina L. Jagnow – was born on 19 April, 1870 in Prussia and died on 27 June, 1929. She was buried on 30 June, 1929 at the St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York. Alwina filed her naturalization papers on 13 June, 1925. She was never married. She is buried at the St. Paul’s Church Cemetery, Elmont, New York.

 

5th - Rev. Albert August Jagnow Sr. – was born on 1 September, 1873 in Prussia. Albert filed for his naturalization papers on 15 June, 1899 and was application was granted on 1 July, 1899. Albert married Maria E. Gliewe. Albert August Jagnow graduated from the German Theological School in 1903. Upon graduation Mr. Jagnow was commissioned to go to the Island of Ruk in the Carolina Islands in the Central Pacific. His mission dates are listed from 1903 to 1907. Rev. Jagnow is buried at the St. Paul’s Church Cemetery in Elmont, New York.

 

Maria E. Gliewe was born on 21 January, 1872 in Germany and died on 12 April, 1949 at Dubuque, Iowa. She is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe County, New York, under her maiden name of Maria E. Gliewe.  

 

Albert and Maria had one son together: 

 

i - Albert August Jagnow Jr., that was born on the 10th of October, 1907 at Douglaston, New York and 30 April, 1955 at Dubuque, Iowa. He is buried at the Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. Albert married Ardath Helen Goettsch.
